Beautycounter: safer skincare & cosmetics

It all started when...

I found myself beset with "environmental illness" in 2013. As my health rapidly began to decline, I was diagnosed with over a dozen mystery illnesses including chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, Epstein-Barr virus, and multiple autoimmune conditions.

In the midst of this I became a skincare hippie...

I began using all kinds of natural stuff for fear of absorbing harmful toxins - from henna to dye my hair to coconut oil for everything. Don't get me wrong, I love coconut oil (and still use it as a makeup remover in addition to eating it!) and I continue to cover my gray hair with henna. But, after 4 years of a meticulous skincare and makeup routine I decided I wanted to find products that were safe AND high performing. I wanted to experience a little luxury for the price I was paying for those "food-grade" cosmetics!

Enter Beautycounter...

A friend and very popular health food blogger introduced me to Beautycounter in 2016 and I've been testing (and loving!) their products for the past year.

Safety record...

Beautycounter has a rigorous screening process for all ingredients; most products rate a 1 or 2 with the Environmental Working Group's EWG Skindeep database.

They have an unprecedented "Never List" of over 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals that they will never use in their products. Beautycounter's color cosmetics are also batch tested for heavy metals three times before they become available.

Performance example...

Beautycounter's Tint Skin Foundation and Concealer (for under the eyes) are an excellent place to start. Here's why:

1. They are high-performing, while still being safer. This makes me feel better about my makeup-wearing (something I all but ceased doing for a few rough years). They're free of ethoxylated ingredients that can carry the toxin 1,4 dioxane, BHT, and ingredients studied to be potential systemic irritants or hormone disruptors.

2. The foundation contains hyaluronic acid, which helps maintain my skin's moisture balance while making my skin look smoother. The coverage is also buildable, which keeps it customizable.

3. The concealer, which resembles some very high-end concealer pens, brightens under my eyes without settling into fine lines.
